As coffee lovers, having watched a cleaning product advertisement that was demonstrating how one could effectively clean a pyrex glass percolator using the harsh chemical, we were appalled!
Not only was the advert advocating for the use of some of the most toxically strong (in my opinion) cleaning agents but it was also claiming that the product could be completely flushed clean from one’s unit. After the advert, the question that was running through our mind was “do they really expect us to use such a product and then brew our coffee through our percolator? And actually, drink the brew (perhaps multiple times) YUCK !?”
After realizing that other coffee lovers (especially those who own a pyrex glass percolator) may actually feel the need to buy the product in order to maintain their unit, we decided to write this post to provide information relating to how to naturally store, clean and care for your pyrex glass percolator.
Pyrex Glass Percolator Care (and Storage)
Watch this short video on how to care your pyrex glass percolator, before reading our article below…
Before we get into the nitty-gritty involved in caring for a pyrex glass percolator, we thought we should mention that most of the following tips are common sense. However, it may be useful for you to read through the list just to brush up on what you already know.
1- Keep your unit far from reach when not in use
Admittedly, there is nothing more eye pleasing than a great display in a house (the display of bowls and special dishes). However, when it comes to your pyrex glass percolator, it’s probably best if you limit the amount of time it spends in such displays since they are very delicate. If feel that you must display the unit, I would suggest that you use the glass curio-type case.
2 – Keep your young hands off the unit
We guess this pointer is pretty self-explanatory. By keeping away young hands (as well as pets) you will not only make sure that your unit stays intact, but your loved ones do not get hurt by shards of glass (should the unit meet its untimely demise).
3 – Do Not Remove the Unit from Heat then Clean it immediately (Duh!)/ Heat a Harsh Cleaning Agent in the Unit to Clean it
There are several online sources which claim that the best way to clean a pyrex glass percolator is by heating some water mixed with some cleaning agent with it. Let us be the first to discourage this action as it may be disastrous! Considering that some units have been known to shatter when placed over a high heat source, you can imagine what can happen when a caustic cleaning agent is added to the mix! Although others may swear by this cleaning method, we wouldn’t chance it if we were you.
Also, avoid trying to clean your unit immediately after it has finished the brewing process. Just like any other glass, pyrex glass is susceptible to breakage when it comes into contact with two temperature extremes, that is, from boiling point (when percolating) to extreme cold (when placed under running cold tap water for cleaning).
4 – Avoid using Harsh Cleaning Agents/ Detergents
To clean a pyrex glass percolator, you first need to forget about placing it in the dishwasher or using the harsh cleaning chemicals that advertisers swear will work so well you won’t believe it. Why? Not only will the harsh chemical ruin your unit’s beautiful glass finishing, but it may also leave some chemical residue that is definitely going to alter the taste of coffee the unit brews next. This will both waste your time (percolating coffee is not one of the simpler coffee brewing methods out there) and your money since you will use coffee grinds, water, and a heating source (all of which are not free!) to make a brew that will only end up being poured down the drain.
Therefore, it is important to note that all you need when it comes to cleaning a pyrex glass percolator is warm soapy water and a non-abrasive sponge (basically what you would use to clean any other dish manually). Remember, the unit’s glass stem and glass basket are super fragile and ought to be handled with the utmost care. SO, you can actually leave the stainless steel band and the handle on for several cleanings (this will make the basket and glass stem easier to handle when cleaning). It is okay to unscrew the stainless steel band (once in a while) to clean under the rubber band.
We hope the information shared here is of value to you.
